HARVEST FESTIVAL, 19th September 2021

“The Lord Loves a Cheerful Giver”

“Come ye faithful people come,

Raise the song of harvest home,

All is safely gathered in,

‘ere the winter storms begin…”

…and so it began, the Harvest celebration of 2021 at St. James’.  The Communion Service also included the commissioning of some young people as they set off on their journey towards Confirmation, against a backdrop of autumnal garlands, abundant seasonal produce and plentiful gifts of non-perishable food.

Soul-searching questions challenged our thinking:

“What does your harvest look like?”…

…“Is it a harvest of dreams?  Holidays?  Stable finances?  A new home?  A happy, loving family?”

Of course, there will be different harvests for different people.

“What does the harvest at Church look like?”…

…Thought-provoking words, “whoever sows sparingly, will reap sparingly”, stop us in our tracks. Immediately we recognise that harvesting is a process with consequences and it is never a single event.  We will always reap what we sow.  Both the quality and quantity of what we sow is vital too. We all have a responsibility to sow good seeds.  Developing this idea further, our words are seeds we sow, minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day.   Loving words, joyful words, peaceful words, gentle words, kind words all bear fruit.  Our challenge must be to sow our words in life to become the harvest we expect; a harvest brimming over with kindness and abundant love, the harvest of Jesus’ love for each one of us.

Sowing for the harvest takes preparation and activity.  It is a transformational process.  Likewise, here at St. James’, we look forward to new and exciting harvests as part of the Over Wyre Benefice as the church evolves further in its mission.  We need to continually sow God’s word out in the community, in our places of work and in our families, and work towards the harvest time.

New seeds are being sown in our young people as they are commissioned at the beginning of their Confirmation journey.  Anointed with oil, in the sign of the cross, they step closer towards accepting their own commitment to a Christian life and furthering the Baptismal promises made on their behalf, when they were babies.  They will prepare over the coming weeks for Confirmation on 10 th  October 2021, at St. Oswald’s Church.

Thank you for the abundant gifts of food and generous monetary donations which will be used wisely for good in our community and further afield.  “The Lord loves a cheerful giver.”

God, we thank you for your harvest which feeds us so many times each day.

We are nourished with your forgiveness and hope

We are sustained with your strength and patience

We are filled with your grace and compassion

God we thank you for feeding us with a harvest of plenty

We are restored through your generosity and healing

We are replenished with your abundance and joy

We are reminded of your selfless abandon

God we thank you for feeding us with the bread of heaven

Your gift of Christ sustains our lives

His presence restores the promise of your love

His life fills our hearts with your everlasting light

God we thank you too for filling us with the water of life

May we drink deeply that our thirst may be quenched,

May your river continue to flow

Over us, in us, through us

And out into the world you love
